The Polish 1934 pattern saber, also known as “Ludwikówka,” is an iconic weapon that played a crucial role in Poland’s history. The wz.34 saber is characterized by a lightweight yet robust construction typical of cavalry sabers. This saber gained legendary status primarily due to its role in battles of the Polish cavalry during the Defensive War, commonly known as the September Campaign of 1939. To this day, it remains a symbol of Polish armaments from the interwar period and one of the most desired collector’s artifacts.

The blade of the sword is steel with visible grooves and fuller on both sides; a deep patina is visible along the spine of the blade. The blade is double-edged. The handle grip is wooden, made of beech wood, with a brass guard, cross-shaped ending in an oval hole for the knot. The quillons are trapezoidal in shape with visible seams. The guard is angled at a right angle, connecting to the pommel. The pommel has a brass cap with a screw securing it to the blade.

On the spine of the blade, visible markings include those of the civilian expert Tadeusz Książenicki K2 in an oval, and the saber number 6175. On the outer side of the blade, the blade is marked “S.wz.34” (Szabla Wzoru 34- Sword Patter.34)  and on the opposite side of the blade, the manufacturer’s signature is stamped: H. LUDWIKÓW/KIELCE. The saber and scabbard bear matching serial numbers.

The wz. 34 saber is the most recognizable saber of the Polish Armed Forces from the interwar period. The overall condition of the blade and handle can be seen in the photos. The saber, along with its scabbard, underwent professional renovation.
