Imperial Russian Naval Helmet Plaque of the 35th Regiment. The eagle was used in 1833-1856 on the shakos of the Russian Navy. The insignia is in the form of a double headed crowned eagle, with a shield showing St.George slaying the dragon. The eagle is seated on an amazon shield with the number 35. In the background two crossed anchors.

The eagle comes with a leather plaque on which it was mounted, inscribed on the back with collection stamps, partly Illegible. However according to the inscription this piece “was brought by a Frenchman from Crimea, during Crimean War of 1853-56, probably taken from the hat of a dead Russian sailor. All crews of Russian war-ships were transferred on land to defend Sebastopol, especially to man heavy guns of forts.”. Great piece in fantastic condition with provenance.
